Hutson, Alan R. Jr., CFRE
Alan has devoted his personal and professional life to philanthropy. A Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), Alan has helped Richmond-based nonprofits raise more than $25M in private funding. The clients he has served for three or more years have seen their annual funds double or triple in that time.
A partner in The Monument Group, a Richmond-based company that provides fund-raising management services to nonprofit organizations, Alan specializes in helping organizations and individuals find their potential and apply it. His services include volunteer coaching, case statement creation, grant writing, process implementation, survey design, risk assessment, financial analysis, and statistical analysis.
- His campaign work includes The Healing Place, the Southside SPCA, the Richmond Public Library Foundation and the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood.
- He managed the annual fund of the Daily Planet for three years (the fund more than doubled under his management), and currently manages the annual funds for CrossOver Health Care Ministry and Virginia League for Planned Parenthood.
- Under his management, the Central Virginia Chapter of the National MS Society raised a record amount with their Dinner of Champions event. He has also worked for FightSMA, Neighborworks Resource Group, the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, the Johns Cancer Foundation, Hostelling International, the Community Tax Law Project, the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education, and Save Our Shelters.
Alan serves on the boards of three organizations: the Central Virginia Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (Immediate Past Chair), Circle Center Adult Day Services (Past Governance Committee Chair), and 1708 Gallery (Finance Committee Co-Chair).
His civic memberships include the Rotary Club of Richmond, where he is a Paul Harris Fellow and past recipient of the President’s Award. Alan also is a member of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and a board member of the Richmond Business Council where he serves on the Council’s Education Committee.
Alan’s professional affiliations reflect his commitment to advancing the field of philanthropy. He is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Virginia Association of Fundraising Executives. In 2009, Alan was invited to speak at the Southern African Institute of Fundraising (SAIF), where he presented an in-depth look at developing effective case statements. During his stay, he also performed pro bono consultation with local nonprofits. Alan will again be a featured presenter at SAIF’s 2011 conference. Additionally, he and his business partner have established a fund at The Community Foundation – Serving Central Virginia, bearing their company’s name.
A graduate of Davidson College and with previous careers in environmental economics and business valuation, Alan has a background in survey design, risk assessment, financial analysis, and statistical analysis. He is a graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond (Class of 2008) and AFP’s Faculty Training Academy (Class of 2010). Alan is currently enrolled in the Masters in Public Administration program at Virginia Commonwealth University and holds a post-baccalaureate certificate in Nonprofit Management from the same institution. He’s an avid rock climber and resides in the historic Fan District of Richmond, Virginia.
